In honor of Agnes Varda’s passing on 29 March, Æther will present a selection of her groundbreaking and poetic films. Widely considered the ‘mother of the French New Wave,’ Varda is known for her playful and challenging depictions of female subjectivity and imaginative storytelling techniques. Throughout her career, which spanned across six decades, Varda worked across genres and styles, creating a haphazard, historical, and deeply personal oeuvre.

On Friday, 5 April we will screen, CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 (1962, 89 min), Varda’s third feature. The film captures Paris in the sixties with the real-time representation of a singer, Cléo (Corinne Marchand), as she awaits the test results of a biopsy. The multi-layered film pictures a reflection on the inner life of a woman faced with her own mortality, opposing symbols of superstition with science, while cataloguing real-time.
